Do you remember when the former CNN host Chris Matthews famously mentioned feeling a “thrill up my leg” after watching a speech by Barack Obama before the 2008 election?
This captured the excitement surrounding the candidate at that time.
Recently, CNN’s Van Jones acknowledged that he hadn’t experienced anything similar to the energy of the 2008 DNC until now.
Known for his passionate “whitelash” comments following Trump’s victory in 2016, Jones admitted that the momentum is currently favoring the GOP, as the spirit in the RNC convention hall has been consistently upbeat throughout the week.
[Tons of crosstalk] “…I want to say something, this spirit, [referring to legal analyst Scott Jennings], that this guy has, you guys think that because this guy is drunk. He’s not.”
This whole thing is like this. And hey, look. Hey guys. The last time I was in a convention that felt like this was Obama 2008. There’s something happening. “
“You just wrote a headline, by the way,” a co-anchor interrupted.
Yes, you certainly did, Mr. Jones.

Jennings jumped in: “Just like Obama. And just like Obama, Trump is showing in this convention, he has the capacity to alter the composition of the electorate, that is [inaudible] like the difference.”
Former Obama strategist David Axelrod took his turn at interrupting, opining that the difference between “2008 [and] now is that Obama was actually popular outside of his own party.”
Following Trump’s speech, Jones predictably retracted his statements, as he was unwilling to acknowledge the truth for an extended period. However, the undeniable fact remains that Biden’s campaign is in disarray, while the RNC Convention has achieved remarkable success. Speaker after speaker delivered outstanding remarks that resonated with a wide spectrum of the American public.
Jones observed earlier in the week that “something was brewing,” and took to social media on Wednesday to announce the Republicans’ consolidation around their nominee.

Despite their complaints, Jones was correct from the start: there’s a palpable shift in the air. Biden’s candidacy is faltering, while Trump is gaining ground.
Numerous polls confirm this trend. Although I don’t feel a surge of excitement myself, I’m still heartened by the dramatic turn of events in recent weeks, which has drastically altered the course of the election (even though things were already leaning in Trump’s favor before the debate and the Butler, Pennsylvania shooting).
It’s uncertain if Joe Biden will even make it through the weekend as a candidate for reelection, but for once Van Jones was on point: there hasn’t been this level of enthusiasm in the Republican party in quite some time.
