Twitter Scraps Employee Benefits Like Meal Allowances, Reduces ‘Family Planning’

Elon Musk is still cutting items that the company really doesn’t need like free meals. Simple math showed that the company was paying $400 per meal. There were more people cooking breakfast than were eating it. They quit serving dinner before Musk took over because everyone was gone for the day by the time it was served. Evidently, no one puts in overtime despite the large salaries they were making. I know I worked a ton of overtime when I was making much less than they were,

A former employee claimed that Musk was lying about the $400 dollars per meal. But, the simple math is that the company paid out $13 million dollars for serving with only 10% of the workforce in the San Francisco office taking advantage of the free meals. The average pay for workers was $140k a year. Musk has cut 2/3 of the employees and yet there have been no problems keeping the platform operating.

Musk is putting the now unnecessary equipment up for sale, including  La Marzocco espresso machines and Rotisol rotisserie ovens, as well as commercial blenders and grinders, refrigerators, grills and griddles, fryers, braising pans, and pizza ovens. He will also be selling off the excess furniture that is no longer needed. If Musk was smart (and he is) he should move the San Francisco office to Texas. The tax savings alone would go a long way toward paying for the move. It would also benefit employees who would no longer be paying state income tax.

The move makes sense since he already has his Tesla and Space X offices there. California lost 300,000 people in 2022 and I look for those numbers to increase as the state continues to raise taxes and user fees. Rents are sky-high and purchasing even a small house can cost a fortune. And worst of all people have to live with the most Democrats of any state in the country. That must be excruciating. California does have one thing that vegetarians love and that is the state is chock full of fruits and nuts.

The dismissals at Twitter occurred as commentators brought attention to social media videos of employees at prominent technology companies enjoying lavish amenities while appearing to perform minimal amounts of work. One 23-year-old product manager at Meta, for instance, recorded a “day in the life” video filled with workouts and free meals rather than staff meetings or work calendars. A similar video from an employee at Twitter featured wine on tap, foosball, a meditation room, and smoothies.

Schiffer revealed that family planning benefits would also be impacted. A report from Business Insider said that the $80,000 in lifetime costs related to fertility treatments and adoption would be reduced to $40,000.

Neither Schiffer nor Business Insider said whether the company’s abortion-related benefits would be impacted. A spokesperson for Twitter previously said in a statement for Platformer last year that all employees “should have equitable access to care” regardless of “medical conditions or geographical location.” Joining other firms in the technology sector, the social media company instituted a policy one month after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, offering employees and their dependents $5,000 of travel reimbursements if abortion is not accessible within 100 miles of their location.

Since the reversal of the landmark opinion, young workers have indicated that they are looking for an employer that “publicly supports access to abortion” and offers corresponding benefits, according to a poll from Lean In, a Left-wing nonprofit launched by former Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg. Among those in managerial positions, 43% of women and 40% of men are considering a job change, while 84% of women under 40 believe that the overturn of Roe v. Wade will “negatively impact women’s ability to advance in the workforce.”
