In late June, a Border Patrol agent at an El Paso, Texas processing center allegedly faced an attack by a female Venezuelan national, as reported by the Border Report.
The woman, Maria Alexandra Louze Flores, was apprehended on June 30 after being deemed “ineligible” to be in the United States.
She was stopped at an Interstate 10 checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection operates interior checkpoints along major highways near the border to intercept illegal narcotics and individuals attempting to travel further into the country after evading border agents.
At the El Paso checkpoint, Louze Flores was detained by law enforcement agents and placed in a Border Patrol van before being transported to a nearby processing center.
Once at the processing center, court records show that Louze Flores was taken to the intake area where she was questioned by a Border Patrol agent.
Her belongings were set aside for storage during this process. However, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by Border Report, Louze Flores attempted to walk away from the interview and retrieve her items but was stopped by the agent.
When he grabbed her arm, she responded by trying to pull away and swinging at the agent’s face.
A struggle ensued between them which led to Louze Flores reportedly striking an officer’s face several times before two additional officers intervened and restrained her.
As a result of this incident, Louze Flores was charged with assault on a federal officer and is scheduled to appear in court on July 8.
The criminal complaint also mentioned that one of the Border Patrol agents sustained “visible injuries” on his face, neck, ear, and hands during the altercation with Louze Flores.
In light of this incident and ongoing border security concerns in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott provided an update on efforts aimed at filling gaps left in the border wall after construction was halted by the Biden administration.
He shared that Texas National Guard soldiers are working on constructing barriers along the border in El Paso as part of their strategy to deter and repel illegal entry into the state.
Border Patrol officials in the El Paso Sector have reported more than 200,000 encounters within the first eight months of fiscal year 2024.
These encounters included approximately 133,000 single adults, almost 60,000 individuals in family units, and over 11,000 unaccompanied children.
The alleged attack on a Border Patrol agent by Louze Flores highlights not only individual incidents but also broader issues related to border security in Texas.
Such incidents serve as examples of challenges faced by law enforcement officials tasked with maintaining security along the U.S.-Mexico border.
